"Water is the most basic and critical component of all aspects of human life and it is an indispensable component of the global life support system. The water environment, including rain, irrigation, floods and droughts, can have dramatic impacts on different regions of the world, often with devastating consequences.

The widespread scarcity, gradual destruction and aggravated pollution of water resources in many areas, and the progressive encroachment of incompatible activities have led to a range of water crises across the globe.

The complex nature of these problems and issues requires an integrated planning and management approach. The information on this page points to the work of United Nations University in the field of water, including activites undertaken and coordinated by UNU in support of the Third World Water Forum held in Kyoto, Japan from 16 to 23 March 2003."
