UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan
to Open "UN House" in Tokyo
on 24 January 2001 (Wed), from 11:00-11:30 a.m.
at United Nations University Building, Tokyo
On 24 January 2001 United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan will formally open the United Nations University (UNU) Building as the "UN House" in Japan.
This is part of a continuing effort to make the UNU Building more open and accessible to the Japanese public. We plan to reconfigure the first and second floors of the UNU building, making it possible for the UNU to host permanent and special exhibitions showcasing the work and values of the United Nations.
As an initial step, the European Union (EU), the UN agencies in the "UN House" and the UNU are organizing a special public exhibition on Humanitarian Emergencies that will also be opened by the Secretary-General on 24 January. The exhibition features panels of information on humanitarian emergencies and partnerships in responding to humanitarian crises. The opening of the exhibition will be jointly carried out with Poul Nielson, EU Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid.
