UNU Joint Graduate Courses
Course I: International Human Rights Law and Humanitarian Assistance
Course Details
The year 2008 marks the sixtieth anniversary of the adoption by the UN General Assembly of the historic Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In fact, since its creation in 1945, the UN has continuously endeavoured to promote and protect human rights as well as provide humanitarian assistance through the Commission on Human Rights (now the Human Rights Council) and other UN human rights bodies and agencies by setting international human rights standards, monitoring human rights situations in member states, providing humanitarian assistance, and conducting studies and research. Course I will look into the role of the UN and other actors in the promotion and protection of human rights and humanitarian assistance focusing particularly on refugees, migrants, children, businesses and women.
