Summary
The goal of the regional workshop, organized by the UNU together with the Malay Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment (MOSTE) and the Institute for Strategic and International Studies (ISIS), was to examine the impacts of environmental degradation at both the national and regional levels, and to support the formulation of an holistic approach to environmental governance.
Through the workshop, tool-kits focussing on particular ecosystems were created for use in other similar ecosystems.
The specific objectives of the workshop were:
- To increase awareness surrounding the need for synergistic approaches and coordination among MEAs at the regional level;
- To review and evaluate existing regional programmes, activities and frameworks related to synergies and coordination among MEAs;
- To identify and explore opportunities and entry points for inter-linkages, both through natural ecosystems and through organizational structures;
- To identify and examine possible new frameworks for linking related MEAs.
