Objectives

The United Nations University (UNU) Global Seminars are aimed at deepening the understanding among students and young professionals in Japan of pressing issues that are the concern of the United Nations, its Peoples and Member States. Following the establishment of annual seminars in the Shonan, Kobe, Hokkaido, Okinawa, Shimane and Kanazawa areas, the UNU Global Seminar-1st Tohoku Session was held in Sendai City in 2002. Following the 2nd Tohoku Session held in Akita City in 2002, the 3rd Tohoku Session will take place in Fukushima City this year.

With the rapid development of globalization, approaches to our cities, local communities and lifestyles have come into serious question. Continuing on the success of last year's Tohoku Session, "Global Environment and Regional Development," this year's seminar aims at a sustainable society including concepts such as a recycling-oriented society, sustainable cities, community regeneration, local production for local consumption, and slow-life. We would like to explore sustainable society and the co-existence of globalization and localization based on global and local perspectives.

This four-day seminar brings together distinguished scholars and practitioners from both Japan and abroad who will give lectures as well as engage in an active exchange with the participants. The format will consist of keynote speeches, lectures and group discussions. We welcome applications from those throughout Japan who are interested in issues of global concern or are pursuing international or local community service-based careers. The opening ceremony and keynote lectures will be open to the general public on the first day.
