United Nations University (UNU) hosted a public symposium entitled "In Pursuit of an Inclusive Global Community - A Fair Globalization in a Turbulent World" on Thursday, 1 July 2004, at UN House in Tokyo. This full-day symposium was held in cooperation with the International Labour Organization (ILO).

Our driving spirit has been to make globalization a positive force for all people and countries. We propose no panaceas or simple solutions; instead we suggest a new perspective
(Halonen & Mkapa, 2004, vii).
Globalization is one of the timely topics that have been discussed in many countries. It is in our power to make the world safer, fairer, and more ethical, inclusive and prosperous for the majority of humankind -- In this symposium, participants discussed a report published earlier this year by the ILO's World Commission on the Social Dimension of Globalization.
