Professor David Ward

A leading spokesperson for American higher education, David Ward became the 11th president of the American Council on Education on September 1, 2001, after serving as Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Madison from where he also received his doctorate in Geography in 1963. He received his B.A. and M.A. in geography from the University of Leeds, UK before emigrating to the US. At the University of Wisconsin-Madison he was Andrew Hill Clark Professor of Geography. In 1989 he was elected President of the Association of American Geographers. Ward's service to higher education includes the chairmanship of the Board of Trustees of the University Corporation for Advanced Internet Development, a nonprofit group that spearheaded the development of Internet 2, and as a member of the Kellogg Commission on the Future of State and Land-Grant Universities.
