Professor Otto S.R. Ongkosongo

Geologist and Research Professor, Research Center for Oceanography, Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), Jakarta, Indonesia

Otto S.R. Ongkosongo Otto Sudarmadji Rahmono Ongkosongo graduated with a degree in geological engineering from Gadjah Mada State University in Yogyakarta in 1969 (B.Sc.) and 1977 (Ir.). From 1968 to 1972, he started his career as government teacher at PIRI Junior High School in Yogyakarta. He obtained a doctorate degree in oceanology from the Université de Bordeaux I (France) in 1984 (très honorable et les félicitations du jury).

In 1976, he was temporary junior researcher at the National Centre for Oceanology (LON) of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), where he was permitted to continue his studies to obtain his Ir. degree. In 1988, he achieved the highest degree as Research Professor on coastal environment from the government. In 1995, he achieved his highest rank/position as a government official (Pembina Utama, Principal Officer), and in 2003 he was given an award by the President of the Republic of Indonesia for his 20 year service at this highest level.

From 1989 to 1993, he was Indonesian representative of Indonesia for the UNDP-IHP-UNESCO-IRTCES (RTPESA) programmes. From 1986 to 1996, he was Council member of National Board of Research Professors (MAPU and P2JP) and in 1986-2000 he was Chairman of Board of Research Professors (FAPU) of this Institute. Dr. Otto co-founded the Indonesian Association of Environmental Impact Analists (IADLI) in 1987, and was founder and Director of Centre for Environmental Study and Disaster Study (PSLB) and Centre for Coastal Zone Study (PPWP) of the UNTAG Jakarta. He was also founder of the first marine geological section and cartographic section of the LON-LIPI, and at present he still serves as Research Professor of the Research Institute for Oceanography (formerly LON, at present P2O) of LIPI.
