Dr. Marju Lauristin

Professor of Social Communication, Tartu University; former Minister of Social Affairs, Estonia

Marju Lauristin Marju Lauristin (Estonia) is professor emeritus of Tartu University and Doctor Honoris Causae of University of Helsinki. She had been teaching media, social policy and political communication. She was elected to Estonian parliament (1990-1995; 1999-2003), and was the Minister of Social Affairs from 1992 to 1994. She participated in the UN Committee for Development Planning (2000-2006) and is a member of the Advisory Committee for the Protection of National Minorities at the Council of Europe (from 2004). In 2007 she was elected a member of the board of the European Sociological Association. Since 2004 she is a member of the UNU Council. Her main research interests are in sociological studies of post-communist transformation and of minority issues.
