Lidia R. Arthur Brito

Assistant Professor, Faculty of Agronomy and Forest Engineering, Eduardo Mondlane University; former Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology, Mozambique

Lidia R. Arthur BritoDr. Lidia Arthur Brito is a former Minster of Higher Education, Science & Technology of the Republic of Mozambique. From 1982 to 1983, she was an Assistant Lecturer at Faculty of Agronomy and Forestry (UEM). She was a guest worker at Wageningen Agricultural University in The Netherlands from 1983 to 1985. From 1985 to 1988, she was an Assistant Lecturer of Wood Sciences at Eduardo Mondlane University. Upon completion of her M.Sc. and Ph.D. studies, Dr. Brito was an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Forestry at the same university, as well as Head of the Wood Technology Section and Coordinator of the Natural Resources Management and Biodiversity Group (GRNB). In 1996, Dr. Brito became an Assistant Professor and the Head of the Forestry Department. From December 1998 to January 2000, she was the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs.

She has served as member of many boards, including the IHE-UNESCO Governing Board, the UNESCO-NEPAD  High Level group, the Advisory Board of the Community Development Carbon Fund, the Steering Committee for the program on Sustainable Management of Forests in Africa, the Board of Directors of the Development Gateway Foundation, and recently as member of the Board of Trustees for SciDev.

Dr. Brito's undergraduate degree is in Forestry from the Eduardo Mondlane University in Mozambique. She completed her M.Sc. degree in Wood Sciences in 1990 from Colorado State University in the United States. She continued her studies at the same institution to obtain her Ph.D. in Forest Sciences in 1994.

Dr. Brito is married with two daughters.
