Announcement
Akino Memorial Internships
for Young Japanese at United Nations Organizations

|
In March 1999, the Government of Japan contributed \100,000,000 to the United Nations University (UNU) in memory of Dr. Yutaka Akino, who was killed in July 1998 while on active service as a Civil Affairs Officer of the United Nations Mission of Observers in Tajikistan (UNMOT). The UNU and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) agreed that this Akino Donation would be used over a period of several years to support four separate activities related to late Dr. Akinofs research and professional interests. Part of the donation is used to support young Japanese who undertake internships at United Nations Institutions outside of Japan. The main purpose of this project is to raise awareness of issues of global concern among young Japanese and to increase their understanding of the functioning of international organizations, in particular with regard to conflict prevention and peace-building as well as the Central Asian region, which were at the centre of Dr. Akinofs activities. |
| Extent of UNU support: |
UNU will cover the travel and insurance cost and provide support towards the living expenses of up to six interns for a maximum of one year. UNU will not assist in locating internship positions. |
| Qualifications: |
Young Japanese university graduates, who have applied for an internship position or have been accepted as interns at any organization within the UN System (including UN Specialized Agencies) located outside of Japan, are invited to apply, irrespective of their field of specialization at university. |
| Selection: |
Applicants are to submit the completed application form including an essay outlining their reasons to take up an internship in the UN System (Item 8); evidence of application or acceptance for an internship position at a UN System organization outside of Japan; two letters of recommendation; and a transcript of college and graduate-school academic records.
United Nations University will review the applications with particular emphasis on the relevance of the internship position chosen by the applicant to Dr. Akinofs areas of research and professional interest, on the demonstrated interest of the candidate in issues of global concern, on her or his prior experience in working, on a voluntary or other basis, for the advancement of society, and on the level of language capability in the working language(s) of the organization the candidate has chosen for the internship. |
| Obligations: |
Akino Memorial Interns are to submit a report on the work done, and experience gained, upon completion of their internships. |
| Deadline for application: |
