Announcement
United Nations University
Akino Memorial Research
Fellowships

In March 1999, the Government of Japan contributed JPY100,000,000 to the United Nations University (UNU) in memory of Dr. Yutaka Akino, who was killed in July 1998 while on active service as a Civil Affairs Officer of the United Nations Mission of Observers in Tajikistan (UNMOT). The UNU and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) agreed that this Akino Donation would be used over a period of several years to support four separate activities related to late Dr. Akino's research and professional interests. Half of the money, or JPY50 million, is being used to fund the "UNU-Akino Memorial Research Project" on Central Asia and neighboring regions where Dr. Akino had a keen academic and professional interest. The main purpose of this project is to help train young Japanese scholars in Central Asian studies. (On an exceptional basis, fellowships can be awarded to nationals of Central Asian countries who study at a Japanese university.)
1. Overall Theme of the Project: "Human Security and Sustainable Development in Central Asia"
In line with the two main programme areas of the UNU, "Peace and Governance" and "Environment and Sustainable Development", the Akino Memorial Research Fellowships will be awarded for research in the fields of human security and sustainable development in Central Asia and neighboring regions. Under these two themes, UNU will support work on the political, economic and social factors affecting the prospects of peace and stability in the Central Asian countries, as well as on environmental and development issues peculiar to the region.
2. Selection of Akino Research Fellows
Young Japanese scholars, both post-doctoral fellows and Ph.D. candidates, as well as nationals of Central Asian countries who study on above theme at a Japanese university, are openly invited to apply by submitting
- a completed application form,
- two letters of recommendation,
- transcripts of academic records, and
- a research proposal for a project within the framework of the general theme of "Human Security and Sustainable Development in Central Asia", including a detailed outline of a field study in Central Asia for up to one year.
The UNU-Akino Memorial Research Fellowship Selection Committee will review the applications based on their academic quality, relevance to the overall theme of the programme, originality, and suitability of the proposed work schedule. Based on the recommendations of the UNU-Akino Memorial Research Fellowship Selection Committee, UNU will decide to award up to 6 scholarships of a maximum of 1.2 million Yen towards the field research components of the proposed research projects. In principle, fellowships are available for Japanese nationals. On an exceptional basis, fellowships can be awarded to nationals of Central Asian countries who study on above theme at a Japanese university.
